Addgene is Stopping Use of X (formerly Twitter)

By Multiple Authors

Addgene is announcing we have chosen to stop all activity on X, formerly Twitter. If you are interested in engaging with us on social media, you can find us on Bluesky: @addgene.bsky.social; or @addgene on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and LinkedIn. We are also exploring other social media platforms with active scientific communities and welcome suggestions in the comments.

X has moved significantly away from the functionality and features that previously made the platform a mainstay of conversation in the scientific community. Addgene has been considering a gradual move off X as a response to major platform changes, such as limiting access and increased priority given to paid content regardless of user preference.

Addgene is a values-driven nonprofit. Recent remarks and actions by X’s leadership conflict with our values. For this reason, our timeline has accelerated. We significantly reduced posting on November 20, 2023, and as of today, will stop posting, monitoring, and resharing content on X.

Addgene deeply values our community and recognizes the impact of this decision. We realize that with this move, we lose a direct connection with our nearly 22,000 X followers. Every community benefits from a diversity of viewpoints, and we acknowledge there may be a variety of responses to this decision. Addgene can only move forward when we act in alignment with our commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in everything we do. This decision allows us to remain aligned with these values.

To preserve the knowledge, conversations, and community created and shared on our feed, we will not delete @addgene on X. This will additionally ensure that the @addgene handle is always associated with an official Addgene account. You can reach out to us directly via email at help@addgene.org, and we invite you to follow us across our social media accounts.
