#DeckTheLab with Tinsel and Test Tubes, Fa La La La La La La La La

By Caroline LaManna

It’s finally December, and here at Addgene HQ in Massachusetts that means it’s time for near-freezing temperatures, our first of the season snow flurries, dusting off the winter coats and hats, and our annual Deck The Lab holiday decorating contest!

Our #DeckTheLab contest is a time for scientists worldwide to show off their decorating skills. To join the contest, simply embellish and adorn your lab space or your work from home space in a fun, festive holiday or winter theme following the rules outlined below. If you’re selected as a winner, you’ll receive a winter care package from Addgene.

Here are the details:

Contest 1: Deck the Lab - Classic Edition

This edition of the contest is our traditional approach. You might decorate your lab in pipette tip snowflakes, hang stockings filled with tube rack “gifts”, or prepare for the 2022 New Year. One piece of advice - get your PI or lab manager’s approval before letting your imagination run loose on the lab. Have fun! Here’s an example from last year’s contest:

Contest 2: Deck the Lab - Home Edition

This edition of the contest should showcase a winter or holiday theme decor in your work from home space… but with a science twist. Maybe you have a collection of snowman figurines that you can stage in a lab diorama. Or maybe you want to create a stack of wrapped gifts using life science catalog pages. Make your WFH space feel a little more festive this holiday season!

Here’s how to enter:

  • Post your picture or video for either contest on Twitter or Instagram by December 31, 2021.
  • Let us know which contest you are entering in (if you don’t include this, we will make our best guess).
  • Follow @Addgene, use the hashtag #DeckTheLab, and tag @Addgene in the post!

In January, Addgenies will vote on the entries in both the classic lab and home editions. We will select up to 3 winners for each edition and the winners will be revealed on Twitter and Instagram shortly after.

Have fun, be creative, and enjoy the end of year festivities - however you celebrate! And if you want to see how Addgene celebrates and decorates, follow us on Twitter and Instagram as we share pictures of our decked out spaces.
