Tips from the Repository Trenches: Using Barcodes to Track Samples

Posted by Amanda Hazen on Oct 6, 2015 10:30:00 AM

Every plasmid sample enters Addgene the same way. A package is delivered by a mail courier and then the journey of transformation and storage begins. Some samples are submitted as bacterial colonies in petri dishes, but close to 80% of samples are received as DNA in a microcentrifuge tube. Once a sample enters Addgene’s lab, a series of events is triggered. Each step is tracked through barcoded tubes that are scanned into our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), a database we use to keep track of and manage all of the samples that come through our doors. It would be a nightmare if we didn’t have a simple way to track all of our 40,000 samples available for distribution!

The Importance of a Fun Workplace: Company Culture at Addgene

Posted by Laura Veckerelli on Sep 3, 2015 10:30:00 AM

Our story today starts with a bit of Addgene history...

As you may be aware, Melina Fan, her brother Ken Fan, and her husband Benjie Chen co-founded Addgene in 2004. They worked tirelessly to get Addgene from a concept to an up and running repository. As they built the foundation for what Addgene is today, there was a lot of blood, sweat, and, I’m guessing, literal tears (though none of the founders have EVER confirmed this with me). While things were incredibly busy in those early years, the founders knew that company culture and enjoying your job were important parts of team buidling - they relieved some of the pressure of start up life and maintained their sanity by throwing fun into the mix.

More Data for You: Find Articles Citing Addgene Plasmids

Posted by Caroline LaManna on Jun 16, 2015 10:15:40 AM

Exciting news! Addgene recently rolled out a new feature on our plasmid pages - links to articles citing this plasmid. Now you can learn how a plasmid has been used by multiple labs and see what experimental systems it has been validated in.

If a plasmid's Addgene ID # has been referenced in other publications, you'll find a link to the list of citing articles under the "Resource Information" heading in the right column of the plasmid page. Check out the purple arrow in the screenshot below to see what I mean.

Additional Features

Once you've clicked on the "# References" link under the "Resource Information" heading, you'll be directed to a page listing the articles that cite this plasmid. You can use the dropdown to increase the length of the list (purple oval in the screenshot below). You can also use the "Search Table" box at the upper right of the table to search and filter the list of citing articles. From the article list you can click on the PubMed link to find the article abstract and more.
